Yorkshire Dales Insider

A days drive exploring Nidderdale & Wharfedale

This really is one of our favourite days out in the Dales, giving you a real feel for the variety of scenery this wonderful county holds.

But you will not only see a range of beautiful scenery, but also hear about and see at first hand some of the historical treasures which have helped shaped Yorkshire intoo the county it is today.

We will visit the old Spa Town of Harrogate and see some of the Victorian splendour which attracted early visitors to the area. We will pass the architectural treasure that is Ripley - seeing Ripley Castle and the French Gothic architecture and Hotel de Ville.

We will stop in Ripon and see the impressive gothic cathedral dating back to the13th Century before heading out into Nidderdale passing fountains Abbey and the weird naturally carved rocks at Brimham before arriving in Pately Bridge. You will get to see for yourselves why Nidderdale is designated AONB status for being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

From Pateley Bridge we will pass up into limestone country as we pass over the Moors past evidence of past industrial activity with Lime kilns and old lead mines. We will stop at Coldstone Cut to look at Yorkshire's largest artwork installation and fantastic views over the quarry where you can see how the rock was laid down over 100 million years.

We will stop for a walk around the market town of Grassington before heading through Calendar Girl country into Skipton, hearing about its Sheep town origins and see Skipton Castle restored by Lady Ann Clifford after the Civil War.

From here we head back into Wharfedale - past Ilkley another Victorian Spa town before travelling through Otley and the back way through more stunning scenery to Harrogate.

The day is full of interesting sites and helps tell a great story of the Dales. We are really flexible and can stop longer at different locations to suit your particular interests.

The trip can also be run over 2 days as there is so much to see - with longer stops to help you really get acquainted with the locations.
