Yorkshire has so much monastic history and a wealth of Abbeys and Priories dating back to the 12th Century. Wherever you are staying in Yorkshire we can take you out for a full days excursion where we can see and learn about monastic times.
There are a number of Abbeys which we can get to within a a day out as well as taking in some fantastic Yorkshire scenery. If you are staying in Nidderdale or North Yorkshire we can visit Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey and Bylands Abbey in a day with plenty of time for lunch in Ripon or Helmsley depending upon our starting point.
If you are staying in Leeds or West Yorkshire we can visit Kirkstall Abbey and Bolton Priory, again great days out. How these trips differ from our "Days Out" options is that we will get under the skin of life in medieval times before the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in the 1530's.
We will arrange for expert guides from the sites to show us around the sites and bring the stunning ruins to life. We'll learn about traditions, prayer times, what they ate, how they lived. We'll hear about the growth of the power of these religious houses with some Abbeys having far off granges, thousands of acres of land and vast flocks of sheep.
We will also hear how the Augustinian, Cistercian and Benedictine orders differed and what eventually lead to their downfall.
At the end of the day you will have seen some stunning countryside as well as having a clearer picture of this era of history. Contact us if you are interested and we will produce a tailormade tour to suit your needs.
