The movie Calendar Girls has delighted viewers for more than a decade now, as well as becoming a successful West End play and regularly touring the country. The story is of a Yorkshire Women’s Institute raising money for a local hospital by posing nude for an “alternative” calendar, then feeling the stress as the calendar becomes a huge success and attracts the attention of international press who start to gather in the small Yorkshire village.
Calendar Girls starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, was filmed in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, and featured breathtaking scenery as well as the market towns of Kettlewell (doubled as Knapley in the movie) , Burnsall (where the Kilnsey Show scene takes place), Skipton, Grassington and Ilkley. This tour will fature a drive around these locations to witness them at first hand.
But what makes this trip special, is that we will be joined by a local tour guide, who actually appeared in the film! We’ll visit most of the main locations and hear his personal anecdotes of his on set and behind the scenes experiences. His stories guarantee an entertaining day, whilst giving you greater insight into the area and the film.
We will also pass through Ryleston and Cracoe, the home of the real life Calendar Girls as well as the iconic dales sites of Bolton Abbey, Kilnsey Gragg and Barden Towers.
There are many fantastic pubs and tea rooms to take refreshments during the day. And we'll drop our guide off in Skipton at the end of the day where we can stop to explore the shops and Skipton Castle.
Whether you are a huge fan of the film or not, this is a fascinating, fun day out which gives a real flavour of the Yorkshire Dales.
