York is a city of incredible contrasts and exciting discoveries. It's where old meets new, everyday meets the unexpected and grand architecture meets revered ruins.
From the moment you enter the city walls, you'll be captivated by the sight of galleries, historical houses and delightfully unique shops that greet you at every twisty turn. York also boasts excellent theatres, a wealth of pubs and many great restaurants, all built around well preserved medieval features such as the old city walls, York Minster, Cliffords Tower and The Shambles. With so much history – George VI summed it up saying “The history of York is the history of England”, so we’ll tell you a little bit more about this whilst bringing the city to life.
We’ll pass Roman remains, scenes of Viking victories, hear stories of Nasty Normans and Tudor tales, and witness Glamourous Georgian (and Victorian) architecture. We’ll be taking you on a loop starting at St Georges Gardens, across to Clifford’s Tower, then past the Jorvic Viking Centre where we can visit if of interest.
We will walk up the famous Shambles one of the most photographed streets in Britain to an old Roman bath house beneath a pub! This is deinitely worth a 15 minute detour.
Then off to St Helen’s square where we’ll see the magnificent Mansion House. Before then heading up Stonegate and visiting Barley Hall a recently discovered and refurbished Tudor manor house, before getting a close up of the Minster
The day out can be tailored as you wish but we do recommend a Tour of the iconic York Minster on the way around which takes approximately 2 hours. There are plenty of great cafes or restaurants for lunch we can show you - some of them real hidden treasures!
