Yorkshire born Sally Wainwright – the award winning Television writer, producer and director has been responsible for some of the most popular British TV dramas over the last decade.
Her playwrighting credits include Happy Valley – the gritty TV crime drama set in and around Calderdale starring Sarah Lancashire – which won a BAFTA in 2015. As well as the popular comedy drama Last Tango in Halifax the story of childhood sweethearts played by Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid as former childhood sweethearts who are re-united via Facebook.
Both shows have become popular in the United States too having been shown on the PBS channel. Both shows also feature Calderdale and West Yorkshire locations as integral parts of the programs.
On this tour we will not only visit locations from the shows, but also spend time in Sowerby Bridge where Sally went to school, so we can see how she was inspired in her later screen writing career by those early influences.
More recently Sally Wainwright wrote the screenplay to the Bronte sisters drama – To Walk Invisible – bringing the lives of these talented women to life – and being made a fellow of the Royal Television Society in the process. Her new drama about Halifax based business women and diarist Anne Lister called Shubden Hall is to air in 2018.
This tour will cover locations in Calderdale – visiting the old industrial town of Halifax and seeing the iconic Piece Hall, we’ll then take a stroll around Shibden Hall, before taking coffee at Holdsworth House – which featured many times in Last Tango in Halifax including the wedding,
From we will drive through Sowerby Bridge on our way to Hebden Bridge & Heptonstall, We’ll also stop in Haworth venturing into the heart of Bronte Country and seeing the wild Bronte Moorands.
