Jericho & the Ribblehead Viaduct story

Explore the Dales and the ITV drama inspiration

Explore Ribblesdale and the surrounding area...

Our Jericho tour will take you into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales to explore the setting for the new ITV dramatic series starring Jessica Raine, Hans Matheson and Clarke Peters.

Whilst some of the filming was done in and around Huddersfield we will explore the building of the “real Jericho”.

Before reaching the awesome view of Ribblehead Viaduct, we will visit Chapel le Dale, to see the old church and the church yard where many of the workers who died during the building of Ribblehead Viaduct are buried.

The church dates back to the 1500’s and was painted by JMW Turner.

We will walk along the foot of Wherneside, one of Yorkshire’s dramatic Three Peaks along to the Settle-Carlisle Railway, before heading to get our first glimpse of the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct. The Viaduct itself consists of 24 arches with a height of 45ft! (and foundations 25ft below ground).

The first stone was laid in 1870 and the last in 1874, as the viaduct was constructed by over thousand navies living in shanty towns in the vicinity. Jericho is the story of these workers and their lives and tribulations.

As well as bringing this location to life, we will also be able to visit the Yorkshire Dales village of Ingleton as well as seeing some fantastic examples of limestone pavement.
