The movie Calendar Girls has delighted viewers for more than a decade now, as well as becoming a successful West End play and regularly touring the country. Gary Barlow has even turned the events in to a Musical! The story is of a Yorkshire Women’s Institute raising money for a local hospital by posing nude for an “alternative” calendar, then feeling the stress as the calendar becomes a huge success and attracts the attention of international press who start to gather in the small Yorkshire village.
Calendar Girls starring Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, was filmed in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, and featured breathtaking scenery as well as the market towns of Kettlewell (doubled as Knapley in the movie) , Burnsall (where the Knapley Show scene takes place), Skipton, Grassington and Ilkley. This tour will feature a drive around these locations to witness them at first hand.
We’ll visit most of the main locations whilst giving you greater insight into the area and the film.
We will also pass through Ryleston and Cracoe, the home of the real life Calendar Girls as well as the iconic dales sites of Bolton Abbey, Kilnsey Gragg and Barden Towers.
Our day will include some short walks around villages but dont worry we can miss these out if you are not feeling too energetic! And don't worry - there will be plenty of time for refreshments - we know plenty of traditional Yorkshire tea rooms and homely hostelries for lunch or afternoon tea!
Whether you are a huge fan of the film or not, this is a fascinating, fun day out which gives a real flavour of the Yorkshire Dales.
